Asbestos testing cost: what labs and inspectors charge

Only published prices, each linked to its source. Checked November 2026.

Short answer: lab analysis is the smaller part of the bill. One university lab publishes $48 per bulk sample at normal turnaround, and a South Carolina state contract caps standard PLM analysis at $11-$21 per sample. The rest is the inspector’s time and report: that same contract caps inspector time at $95 per hour. Your total depends on how many materials need sampling and how fast you need results.

We did not find a current, independent national survey of what homeowners pay for a full asbestos inspection, so we do not print one. Get two or three written quotes that list the number of samples, the lab, the method and the turnaround.

Published lab price for homeowners

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene at the University of Wisconsin tests samples for homeowners and businesses and publishes its prices.

Bulk sample, priority turnaround$72 per samplePublished homeowner price. Source

Example math using these prices: five materials sampled once each at normal turnaround is 5 x $48 = $240 in lab fees, before any inspector time.

What a state agency pays under contract

South Carolina publishes vendor price lists for its asbestos, lead and mold testing contract (solicitation 5400026429). The figures below are the state’s maximum allowed rates on one vendor’s list. They are volume rates for government buyers, so treat them as a floor, not a homeowner quote.

An older consumer estimate

Fixr’s cost guide, last updated August 19, 2022, gives a $500 national average for asbestos testing with a typical range of $250-$750, and $300-$1,200 for air testing. It is the only consumer-facing range we could open and read, and it is several years old, so expect current local quotes to differ. Source

State fees if the job moves to removal

The fees below are tied to the notice filed for regulated removal or demolition, not to testing. Budget for them if results come back positive.

What changes the price

Should I use a DIY kit to save money?

EPA advises against sampling yourself: done incorrectly, sampling can be more hazardous than leaving the material alone. Source Some states also require a certified inspector for pre-renovation surveys, such as New York. Read do I need asbestos testing before renovating? before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an asbestos test cost per sample?+

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene publishes $48 per sample for normal turnaround (12-14 working days), $72 for priority and $96 for rush. A South Carolina state contract caps PLM bulk analysis at $11-$21 per sample depending on turnaround, which reflects volume pricing for government buyers.

What does a full home asbestos test cost?+

It depends on how many materials are sampled and the inspector's time. Fixr's guide, last updated in 2022, gives a $500 national average and a $250-$750 typical range. For a recent reference point, one South Carolina state contract caps inspector time at $95 per hour and report preparation at $90 per hour, plus lab fees.

Why do some asbestos tests cost more than others?+

Turnaround time and method. In both price lists we used, faster results cost more, and TEM analysis costs far more per sample than standard PLM bulk analysis. Air clearance sampling and air monitoring are separate line items.
